Stainless steel overflow gratings cover the perimeter channel of a deck-level pool, where surface water leaves the pool and runs to the balance tank. They give bathers a safe, barefoot-friendly walking surface and keep coarse debris out of the channel. Cometepool manufactures them in AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel, in 150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm widths, with a standard 1,000 mm module length and a 25 mm section height. These six standard variants (catalogue codes PSZ01–PSZ06) cover most channel dimensions; anything outside them is produced to your project drawing as a custom item.
The slots on the walking face are Ø10 mm and set in a staggered pattern, which keeps the open flow area high while giving a comfortable barefoot walking surface. The grating body has a 19 mm return along its front edge and seats directly into the channel mouth. Both matte and polished finishes are available: polished units look brighter against wet stone or tile, while heavily used public and municipal pools usually specify matte, where footprints and water marks are far less visible.
Plant room covers come off the same production line, fabricated from AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless sheet, lockable and damper-assisted. The damper lets one person lift a heavy cover and holds it open while plant is serviced; the lock keeps the machine room closed to unauthorised access. Standard sizes are 80×80, 90×90, 100×100 and 110×110 cm (MAK01–MAK04). Balance tank covers are supplied without dampers in 50×50, 60×60 and 70×70 cm (DEK01–DEK03). Both types use a recessed frame that can be infilled, so the cover can be finished in the same ceramic tile, natural stone or timber decking as the surrounding pool surround.
For projects that prefer a plastic channel grating, the range also includes single-link gratings in 14.5 / 20 / 25 cm widths, 45° and 90° corner pieces at 15°, 20° and 25°, and a grating corner profile, so curved and faceted pool perimeters can be closed without on-site cutting. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can overflow gratings be manufactured to custom channel widths?+
Yes. Every grating is produced to your project drawing and the exact channel dimensions of the pool. There is no fixed standard size, so non-standard widths are part of normal production.
Is there an alternative to stainless steel for overflow gratings?+
Yes. Alongside the stainless steel version, Cometepool offers a single-link plastic overflow grating within its plastic product group, with colour options available. Plant room covers are manufactured in stainless steel.
Are the plant room covers strong enough to walk on?+
Yes. Plant room covers are built as walkable, load-bearing units. Include the expected loading and opening dimensions in your inquiry and the cover is manufactured to suit your project.
Should I specify AISI 304 or AISI 316?+
Both grades are produced in the same sizes; the difference is corrosion resistance. AISI 304 is the common choice for chlorinated freshwater pools, indoors and out. AISI 316 is recommended for seawater, salt-electrolysis systems, high-temperature spa and hydrotherapy pools, and coastal sites with salt-laden air. Tell us the water type and disinfection method in your enquiry and we will advise on the right grade.
How do I measure for an overflow grating?+
We need three things: the internal width of the channel (the clear opening the grating sits into), the total channel length, and the number and angle of corners or radii around the pool. If the channel is 150, 200 or 250 mm wide it is covered by standard production; anything else is made to size. Take the width at several points along the run — site-built channels often vary slightly, and catching that early avoids gratings that fit in one stretch and not another.
Can gratings be retrofitted to an existing pool?+
Yes — if the overflow channel already exists, replacing the grating is routine work: the old units come out and the new ones seat into the channel mouth. If the pool has no overflow channel at all, a grating on its own will not solve it; the channel has to be built first. Send a few photographs of the existing channel plus its internal width and we can tell you whether standard units or custom fabrication applies.
My channel is not 150, 200 or 250 mm wide. What then?+
Non-standard widths are part of normal production and need no special tooling. The grating is made to the internal width you give us and to the project drawing, with the run divided into modules to suit the channel length. On curved perimeters the units are cut as arc segments and the corners are completed with angled pieces.
Stainless steel or plastic grating?+
Stainless is the choice for prestige projects and heavily used public pools: longer service life, higher load capacity and a surface that cleans easily. Plastic single-link grating comes in 14.5 / 20 / 25 cm widths with colour options and ready-made angled corner pieces, which makes installation fast on free-form pools with many turns. Some contractors use both within one project, stainless on the show elevations and plastic elsewhere.
How are the stainless gratings and covers maintained?+
Wipe stainless surfaces down regularly with cleaning products intended for stainless steel — this matters most on polished finishes, which need it to keep their original look. Do not let chlorine or salt residue dry on the surface, and never use steel wool or abrasive pads. The channel itself also needs attention through the season: lift the gratings periodically and clear leaves and hair from the bottom of the channel.
What is the difference between a plant room cover and a balance tank cover?+
Plant room covers are lockable and damper-assisted, in four standard sizes from 80×80 up to 110×110 cm; because they are opened and closed often for daily servicing, the damper matters. Balance tank covers are supplied without dampers and in smaller sizes (50×50, 60×60 and 70×70 cm), since access to the balance tank is far less frequent. Both types are manufactured in AISI 304 and AISI 316.
